WHAT IS A WRITE-OFF?

Before we get into how to write off a boudoir session, let's first take a look at what a write-off actually is.

A write-off is a business deduction that is used to offset your business income. In other words, if you own and operate a business, you will generate both income and expenses. A write-off is an expense you incur while running your business.

The key thing to remember is that your expenses must be related to your business.

A high-level example of this is owning a lingerie shop in NYC and having to pay rent for the storefront. That NYC rent expense would now qualify as a write-off.

At the end of the year when you file your taxes you would show the income you made for the year and write-off (deduct) your expenses, which would include that rent expense.

Now, if you were to be driving back home to central New Jersey after running the shop all day and stopping to buy groceries, those groceries would not be a business write-off as they are now for personal purposes.

Bottom line, for an individual to take advantage of a write-off they would need to be running a business.

WRITE-OFF YOUR NYC BOUDOIR SHOOT

Knowing what qualifies as a write-off and how it needs to be business related probably already answers the question for yourself.

If you are going to be doing a boudoir shoot as a gift to yourself or to share with a loved one/s then there is no opportunity to write-off your Art of Eros boudoir session.

There are situations when a boudoir/intimate portraiture session would qualify for a write-off (either a portion of it or all of it). I have listed a few examples below.

Scenario One: The New York City Fitness Influencer

For this first example let us pretend that you are a male fitness influencer living in Hell’s Kitchen. Your primary business is creating content for social media talking about fitness, showing off your body, and taking selective high-net worth clients for personal training.

Now let's state that a New York City boutique male lingerie shop reaches out to you to publish photos of yourself wearing their brand of male lingerie. This boutique shop is paying you to market their clothing in cash as well as giving you free clothing items.

Rather than taking the photos yourself, you decide to have them professionally done to show off how sexy you look in your male lingerie.

You get into contact with ETG Art of Eros to discuss the shoot and book it. During the consultation you decide that you would like a personal album from the session as well.

In this scenario only the shoot portion would be deductible, not the album piece.

Reason being the photos were taken to be shared on social media which is a part of your business as being an influencer. The bound leather album that you purchased for yourself is a personal reason and would not qualify.

In this scenario Art of Eros would give you two receipts, one for the business expense of the photoshoot and another for your personal expense. Ideally you would have a bank account for your business and another for your personal expenses, they should both be used to pay for the shoot and album accordingly.

Scenario Two: Sex Worker (SW)

With this next example we will put yourself in the situation as a sex worker who makes the primary of their income from selling photos and videos online from different pay service websites; OnlyFans, Fansly, and Patreon.

At the beginning of the year you determine your content plan for the summer, and decide you want to book a shoot with Art of Eros to assist with the creation of your new content. This includes consulting, photoshoots and editing.

Art of Eros creates a package for you that involves shooting at multiple locations over the course of a few weeks. The shoots are planned in a way to entice new subscribers, and push current subscribers to upgrade their subscription.

After further consultation, you decide that you want to create premium leather bound albums for your top tier followers to purchase. Only ten albums will be made to create scarcity and increase demand.

Since your business revolves around the sale of erotic and intimate photos of yourself, the whole shoot would qualify as a business deduction (write-off) including the albums. You would receive an invoice for the shoots and albums which you would pay as a business expense (hopefully out of your business bank account).

Scenario Three: Nude Art Commission

For this final scenario we will assume the role as a NYC plastic surgeon with a focus on breast surgery. You notice that your walls are a bit bare in your office and you decide some black and white intimate art would be great to fill in that space.

As a doctor you find it extremely important to be inclusive, and wish for these portraits to show different body types. You consult Art of Eros in NYC to coordinate this shoot, and commission three large fine art nude prints for your walls each one with a different model.

Art of Eros coordinates the models, studio, and shoot. You have nothing else to worry about. After a few weeks you receive the three large fine art black and white prints for the walls of your office.

Since the art work is for your office and not being brought home, you could write this off as a business expense. Now, it's extremely important to keep the artwork in your office, we want to keep this as a business expense.

Final Thoughts

For most scenarios the general client will not be able to write-off their boudoir shoot. However, it's important to know the options that are available to you. Regardless of whether or not you can write off your photoshoot, that does not mean it should stop you from celebrating how beautiful and sexy you are.

Book a session with Evan from ETG Art of Eros, I cannot guarantee that your session is tax deductible, but I am beyond confident you will be amazed with how you look and feel in your photos!
