If you haven't read my blog post about planning a shoot with a NYC Photographer, you should definitely check it out. But this post is going to focus on the more risqué side of photography: boudoir nude and anything risqué with NYC Models.
Whether you're a seasoned model or starting out, if you're planning on a boudoir or nude photoshoot, there are a few things you should keep in mind for a safe experience.
With a friendly attitude and some helpful advice, you'll be sure to have a positive experience.
Five Star NYC Boudoir Photographer
When it comes to finding the right photographer, whether they're offering Time for Print (TFP) or you're hiring them on a contracted basis, it's important to do your research.
Hop on Google and make sure they have a website that showcases their work and experience. Even if the photographer does not specialize in boudoir or nude photography, there should still be some kind of website presence.
Take me for example. When I first started out, I only had a single website – 'ETG Photos' – as I didn't have a specific focus on boudoir or fine art nude portraiture yet.
I did, however, create a hidden page that could be shared with anyone who was looking for professional boudoir services, but this page wasn't visible to the public. So make sure you take the time to check out your photographer's website and portfolio before deciding.
A professional website with updated work, testimonials, and blogs is a great indication of a photographer who takes pride in their work. However, if the website they give you is a dead link, looks like it's from 1995, or is inconsistent with who the photographer is, it's best to walk away.
Google reviews are worth their weight in gold when it comes to researching a photographer. Take a look at what others have to say, both positive and negative.
If all the reviews are five stars and blank, then take it with a grain of salt. Make sure the reviews have substance and are consistent with each other before you commit.
At the end of the day, you deserve the best quality. So do your research and have confidence in your decision.
If you're looking for professional, trusting boudoir and nude art settings, customers consistently say that Art of Eros and ETG Photos are the way to go! I prioritize comfort, safety, and respect with every session, so you can feel confident that your experience will be one of a kind.
Professional NYC Nude Art Photographers on Social Media
When looking for work via social media, whether you are seeking a photographer or responding to a model call, it's important to check out the profile.
If the shoot is supposed to take place in NYC, but the "photographer's" profile says they are from a country on the other side of the world, that should be a red flag—unless the post says they are traveling to NYC.
Take a look at their profile photos. If the photos jump from one race and gender to another, or show a random brand as a profile photo, these should be looked at as red flags. These are usually signs of a fake or scam profile, so it's best to avoid them.
To make sure you're dealing with a legitimate photographer, check to see who they have worked with in the past and see what they have to say about them. How professional was the photographer? Any issues during the shoot?
These are key questions to ask yourself to ensure you're working with a reputable photographer.
When responding to a model call, it's important to remember that photographers and casting directors don't need any compromising images or nudes. Your portfolio and social media platforms are exactly what they need to get an idea of your work and who you are.
So just stick to the basics and you'll be good to go!
Trusting and Comfortable NYC Nude Photographer
If you've managed to find a photographer for your shoot, communication should be top priority! Make sure you're staying in touch with one another and having meaningful conversations about the shoot.
If at any point the photographer makes you feel uncomfortable or says something inappropriate, don't hesitate to call off the shoot.
Questions are essential too – the photographer should be able to answer any and all questions you have. Be wary if they are avoiding questions or giving inconsistent responses.
Remember to be friendly but firm, and don't be afraid to call it off if you don't feel comfortable. Communication is key when it comes to working with a photographer, so make sure you have a good dialogue going!
At Art Of Eros, I want you to be comfortable and confident when it comes to your photoshoot - that’s why I believe it’s essential for a professional photographer to have a model release and/or contract ready for the shoot, no matter how experienced they may be.
Even though the photos are legally the photographer's, having a document that explains what the shoot is for and that the images may be used is an important part of being a professional.
Plus, I understand that having a supportive friend with you can make a shoot much more enjoyable - and if you’d like to bring them along, let your photographer know. If they’re not okay with it, that should be a red flag - so back out of the shoot if something doesn’t feel right.
That said, there may be times when bringing a friend isn’t possible - for example, if it’s a large production involving multiple people. In this case, the photographer should explain why it wouldn’t be feasible to have a guest - and if they can’t give you a reasonable answer, again, it’s time to walk away.
Professional Nude Art NYC Boudoir Photographer
At Art of Eros, I make sure you feel safe and secure before your photo shoot even starts. I will send you a release form and questionnaire, no matter your gender or professional status.
If the shoot involves anything that could be considered sultry, sexual, or even showing of a shoulder, you'll then get a release form that includes a nudity statement.
The statement will make it clear that the model has complete choice and autonomy over what they show.
I understand that photoshoots can be nerve-wracking, and I want to do everything I can to make sure you feel comfortable. That's why I take the extra step of providing you with a release form and questionnaire, so you know your choices will be respected.
On the questionnaire, I ask a few items about you, such as your name and preferred pronouns, favorite drinks and snacks, and music preferences.
However, two questions are the most important ones: what's your comfort level regarding clothing for the shoot, and is there anything else we should know about you?
I want to make sure the shoot is designed around your comfort level – for example, if it's a lingerie shoot but you're only comfortable being topless, we want to make sure we respect that.
It's also important to ask about anything else we should know about you before the shoot. We want to make sure you feel comfortable and that we take any necessary precautions when it comes to posing. For example, if you're self-conscious about a scar from a previous surgery, we want to be mindful of that.
Recently, I had the pleasure of working with a model who wanted to push their boundaries and try something new. Growing up in a conservative environment, a sultry fashion shoot was completely uncharted territory for them – and yet something they wanted to do.
I was determined to make sure their experience was tailored to them and their needs, and so I worked to create a space of trust and comfort between myself and the model. The end result was that the model was able to come out of their comfort zone and feel a newfound sense of confidence and accomplishment.
It was an incredibly rewarding experience for both of us.
Fun and Comfortable NYC Nude Boudoir Shoot
At the shoot there are a few things to be aware of, especially when it comes to boudoir or nudity. Changing outfits can be part of the process, and it's important to make sure you feel comfortable while doing so.
If a private room or bathroom isn't available, your photographer should be respectful of your privacy. They should turn away, walk to a corner, and look down at their camera instead of staring at you.
There's no reason for them to witness you changing, all that matters is the end result - the outfit!
I'm about to share a big secret with you: if you ever see me turn away and look down at my camera, it's because I'm giving my model or client some privacy.
I know that my photos always turn out awesome, but I don't want to intrude on my model's personal space or make them feel uncomfortable by watching them change or adjust their outfit. So, when you spot me giving you a little extra privacy, you'll know what I'm up to!
It's completely okay to ask your photographer to turn around while you change outfits. Nobody should make you feel uncomfortable, and your photographer is not there to take photos of you changing clothes.
While boudoir shoots often involve taking off your outfit for a shot, changing clothes isn't part of that.
If they don't turn away, take a look at their camera, or if they’re still making you uncomfortable, feel free to ask them again or leave the shoot altogether. Make sure you have a clause in the contract for harassment before agreeing to an exchange of money for a shoot.
I want to remind you that you are in control. You have the right to feel safe and ask for what you need. It's important to remember that you don't have to do anything you don't want to do.
At Art of Eros, I always strive to create a safe and comfortable environment for our models and clients. I do my best to avoid physical contact and only use it as a last resort when necessary.
I ensure that we always ask permission before touching or adjusting your outfit or pose. I understand that it is important to feel respected, so no sudden touching is allowed.
I also have several techniques that allow me to show models and clients how to adjust their poses and outfit without me having to physically interact with them. I am committed to providing a friendly and professional atmosphere for everyone on the shoot.
